In 2022, wildfires will burn more than 7.5 million acres of land in the U.S., according to the National Centers for Environmental Information. This is an urgent problem and will only get worse as the climate gets warmer and drier.

Although some robots are deployed to fight these deadly fires, few try to prevent them. This is where Kodama Systems comes in.

Historically, forests in the US were less dense than they are today. Overgrown forests have led to more competition for resources between plants in these areas, making them more vulnerable to drought and other stressors.

Scientific consensus also suggests that these overgrown forests are a key contributor to the current wildfire crisis. A number of smaller, often weaker trees are ready to be burned.

To combat this overgrowth, government agencies are increasingly investing in initiatives aimed at thinning these forests. This is a laborious task as it requires several heavy machines to enter the forest, cut down the trees and then haul them out so they can be cut to size and transported to the sawmills for processing.

Sonora, California-based Kodama Systems is working to add autonomy to the process. It creates sets of remote control and autonomy for heavy equipment at work. The team started with a hauler, a device used to haul felled trees out of the forest.

“Our mission is to restore forests for future generations, help support long-term forest health, and accelerate the work that state and federal authorities are asking for right now,” James Sedlak, Co-Head of Operations and Communications at Kodama. he said Report on robots.

In 2023, the company deployed its teleoperation platform on a small logging project in the Stanislaus National Forest. During this project, the company’s delivery truck autonomously hauled bundles of trees along skid tracks to the project’s landing area.
